Black mold is a color people use when they are scared

The housing, not the slogan

Everyday talk: a dark stain that looks wet or fuzzy. In a lab, one species people point to is Stachybotrys chartarum, which likes long-wet cellulose. It is not the only dark mold. Cladosporium, Aspergillus, and old water staining can look the same from five feet. Useful facts: still wet? how big? what water? porous material?

Public EPA mold pages say fix the moisture, then clean or remove what grew, and do not treat color as the whole story. We are not the EPA. This page is not a doctor.

Tile grout mildew after showers is often soap, water, and a fan that vents out. A dry brown ring by a steam radiator may be an old leak. Get a licensed look when porous material stayed wet, the patch spreads or returns, a room smells musty and looks clean, there was a flood or sewage or a long leak, or a board, buyer, landlord, or adjuster wants a report. If someone in the home already has a clinician watching their breathing, say that in the notes. If water is still running, stop the water first, then send the form.

Scraping fuzzy drywall or bleaching a big ceiling in a studio throws dust. While you wait: leave it, do not paint over it, dry the room without blowing across the growth, keep kids and pets out of that room. That is waiting advice, not a cleanup method.

A real job (not ours): licensed assessment and a written scope, water source named and stopped, containment before anyone sands, porous material that is finished leaves in bags, then clearance by someone who did not do the tear-out. “We killed it with a fogger” on fuzzy gypsum is a skip. No spore-reduction percent. No species kill time.
